Health & Sanitation

Switchasia, Wincrock and NCDC supported waste collection vehicle for Ilam Municipality

NCDC has been continuously working on WASH, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene since its earlier days. NCDC works closely with local communities, local government and health service providers (health posts, hospital) to improve the access to both knowledge and services to boost preventive measures as well as providing health facilities primarily in eastern region of Nepal. In the recent days NCDC is using its long experience in community WASH program by expanding its services in the central as well as mid-western part of Nepal.

Some of the major work done by NCDC in health sector is listed below:

  • Construction of Health Post

In the year 1989 NCDC, with the financial assistance of Nepal Community Development Foundation (NCDF) and a CIDA grant, constructed the first local health post in the Namsaling of Ilam, the birth place of NCDC. The clinic is stocked with donated medicines and supplies. Now most villagers have access to health services that were previously unavailable. The clinic sees, on average, 10 to 15 patients per day, for an annual total of approximately 4,500 patients.

  • Social Audit of Health Service Providers

The social audit process is guided by the Ministry of Health Social Audit Guidelines (2073). It aims to increase the social accountability of health institutions towards the community by providing information regarding its services and facilities and maintaining two way communications. The audit process employs participatory methodologies as focus group discussions, interviews, document reviews and direct observation and makes observation on various priority based services such as immunization and nutrition program, institutional development, quality of services, and information dissemination mechanisms.

  • Telemedicine

In the year 2007 NCDC, with the financial assistance of Nepal Community Development Foundation (NCDF) and a CIDA grant, constructed the first local health post in the Namsaling of Ilam, the birth place of NCDC. The clinic is stocked with donated medicines and supplies. Now most villagers have access to health services that were previously unavailable. The clinic sees, on average, 10 to 15 patients per day, for an annual total of approximately 4,500 patients.

  • Wash and Community Health Programs

Clean water, basic toilets and good hygiene practices are essential for the survival of human beings. We work to provide access to quality drinking water and elimination open defecation through various project interventions. In partnership with the Rotary Clubs of Uxbridge (USA & Canada) and Dharan (Nepal) and the Canadian Rotary Committee of International Development (CRCID), NCDC has constructed more than 30 new spring protection projects and 10 drinking water distribution centers in under-serviced areas of Ilam. Our collaboration with Engineers Without Borders and DF Norway has resulted in a number of new latrine project construction in the Ilam and Dolakha district. Community Health is directly related to sanitation. This initiative with latrine construction addresses these primary concerns. Latrine construction is an important part of a larger public health initiative by NCDC and EWB. From 2006 to 2018, NCDC, NCDF, and EWB participated along with the community to build a toilet at each house in the village.
