NCDC conducted an interaction program regarding river conservation and pollution reduction in Dharan municipality.

An interaction program on River Conservation and pollution reduction has been conducted at Dharan Municipality in presence of NCDC's national advisor Mr. Khem Raj Nepal and Under Secretary Mr. Narayan Thapa from Minstry of Local Development (MLD). Among 37 participants, there were eight executive officers from Biratnagar sub metropolitan city, Ilam, Inaruwa, Ithari, Mechi Nagar, Damak, Bhadrapur and Khandbari municipalities and environment officer/sector head of respected municipalities and representatives from different leading NGOs. The objective of program was to increase involvement of local authorities and NGO's on river conservation, to gather all the NGOs who are working in environment sector and unite to work for reduction of river pollution form municipal garbage and waste, increase awareness on river ecosystem and refreshing about existing laws and policies which are related to River conservation and pollution control. NCDC, Ilam Municipality and Ministry of Local Development gave power point presentations to orient on river conservation and pollution control, existing practices and methods and existing laws and policies for river conservation. After presentation there was a long discussion to control river pollution in respected municipalities and the existing practices. The first session concluded with : 1. All the municipalities will prepare a guideline for river conservation and pollution control 2. Municipality will invest for hardware activities and software part will be given to the NGO's. NGO will include software activities focusing on river conservation in their own program The second session was focused on NGO's role and how to unite for the implementation of river conservation activities. The session was concluded with 1. All participated NGO's willing to get membership for the River conservation Network but there is a need of guideline and defined membership criteria. 2. In partnership with Ilam municipality, River Conservation network will manage an exposure and information sharing visit cum workshop at Ilam. 3. There should be a clear vision for sustainability and for this the River Conservation Network will organize an interaction program. The same program will finalize the guideline and define the membership criteria.
